The love story between Jennifer and Mel McMullen dates back more than 80 years.

"I think we've held it together pretty well and had a wonderful family so I'm most proud of my children and also our lasting love," Jennifer said.

Jennifer was living in Los Angeles when World War II ended.

"I was right in the middle of all the hugging, grabbing, kissing. I was there for all of that and it was great," she said.

The couple met while Jennifer rented a room from Mel's mother.

"I was living in the front bedroom when he came home from China and we were engaged six weeks later."

Mel told Eyewitness News what he fell in love with.

"Everything about her. Her beautiful looks. Her jobs that she had. She was just a great person," he added.

They got married in 1946. Now both 100 years old, the McMullens proudly look back at their contributions during the war.

"I'm over 100 years old but what was doing when I was 18 is still a part of history, so that is worthwhile," Mel said.

The World War II veteran served as a member of the famed "Flying Tigers".

"Most of our missions were bombing missions in occupied parts of China and Burma," Mel said. "I was proud of being a nose turret gunner right up in the front of the airplane so it was an exciting thing for a 17-18 year old boy."

Meanwhile, Jennifer worked as a real life Rosie the Riveter.

"Some women worked on really heavy machines but I was fortunate that I was interviewed and became a riveter," she said. "Usually wings. We started one all the way up and you'd go back again. We did parts of planes."

There are no secrets to the McMullen's long life and marriage. They're just happy they got to do next to each other.

"Aging together is the best part," Mel said.
