The cub named Crimson had been receiving treatment at the Oakland Zoo, where veterinarians spent months figuring out how to save one of his hind feet that was missing toes.
In a post on Facebook, the zoo said they tried several approaches, but protecting the limb became more difficult as Crimson became larger and more active.
They eventually determined that amputation the affected limb would give him the best chance. The surgery was performed successfully and the zoo says Crimson has "proven to be incredibly resilient."
"Almost immediately after surgery, he returned to the curious, energetic behavior expected of a growing mountain lion cub. Based on his recovery trajectory to date, we are optimistic that he will continue to adapt exceptionally well. While he may experience some limitations in climbing ability or speed, these can be accommodated through thoughtful habitat design and specialized husbandry in an appropriate future home," the zoo said in its post.
