BURBANK, Calif. -- A favorite Dodgers player is sliding into a new career.

Mookie Betts steps up for a guest spot on the sitcom "Shifting Gears," and knocks it out of the park.

Betts moves from shortstop and clutch hitter to actor, joining Tim Allen and the cast in the Oct. 8 episode.

Co-star Kat Dennings said the set was electric.

"I've never seen the crew like this," she said. "Everyone was flipping out, which is really fun to see."

Betts said this TV team made it easy for him, and he didn't really have to prepare.

"I enjoyed doing it," Betts said. "You look at the lines. You got someone like Tim; he'll take care of you."

We joked that Betts took the job to supplement his MLB income.

"I needed it. I fell on a couple hard times. You gotta do what you gotta do," Betts joked back.

"Hopefully I can land a couple more gigs somewhere," Betts said when asked if he plans to do more acting.

Co-star Daryl "Chill" Mitchell was noticeably impressed with Betts' debut.

"I was so shocked about his performance. I asked him 'Dude, you did this before?' He said, 'I did a couple scenes in commercials,'" Mitchell said. "... He said ya'll just a lot of fun in here; I like this."

Co-star Jenna Elfman does not hide her affection for the Dodgers.

"We're huge Dodgers fans. I'm an Angeleno, my husband's an Angeleno. I've thrown the first pitch twice at Dodger Stadium, my kids did Dodgers summer camp twice," Elfman said.

Allen is a die-hard Detroit Tigers fan. But he did find one place he could complement Mookie and the Boys in Blue.

"Dodgers have the best uniforms. I'll give them that," Allen said. "They look the best when they're out there."

"Shifting Gears" airs Wednesday nights on ABC, next day on Hulu.
