"The Fault in Our Stars" is a teenage romance based on the best-selling young adult novel by John Green. It's based on two somewhat unconventional young adults who may be falling in love. Their initial common bond is cancer. They meet at a cancer support group.
Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort are just wonderful as teenagers trying not to let cancer get in the way of love. The film is charming and sweet. It's very moving and it has such a lovely sense of innocence.
"The Fault in Our Stars" is an emotional movie, and I hope the young women who were in the audience when I saw it had tissues handy because the sounds they were making always go with tears.
You never forget about the cancer aspect of this story, but it's more about living than it is about dying. And it's definitely about expressing the love we feel for the people closest to us.
Someone made a great casting decision by hiring Sam Trammell from TV's "True Blood" to play Shailene's dad. They really look related.
And seeing Laura Dern as her mom just makes me want to see more of Laura in anything, a performance so subtle, so beautiful, so loving -- she just nails it.
This movie is, at times, tough but it's ultimately really inspiring.
