LOS ANGELES -- A world thrown into chaos means a desperate search for hope in "The Dog Stars."

The final trailer just dropped for Ridley Scott's latest film, based on Peter Heller's bestselling novel and featuring a critically-acclaimed ensemble cast with Jacob Elordi, Josh Brolin, Margaret Qualley, Allison Janney, Benedict Wong, and Guy Pearce.

Set in a post-apocalyptic world, Hig the pilot (Jacob Elordi) has worked alongside the survivalist Bangley (Josh Brolin) to carve out a small but stable community. But a mysterious radio transmission pushes Hig to venture out to see if any more humanity really exists beyond their homestead.

The trailer opens with Hig and his dog scouting out the wasteland in his yellow biplane, reflecting on his life before the end of civilization, and trying to relive those memories in a long-abandoned city.

The only remaining sense of society is a rugged community living off the land, heavily guarded by Hig and Bangley against violent groups of people driven mad by the end of the world.

"Here it's just us trying to hold on to what was," Bangley says. "The only thing left to fear? Survivors."

Hordes of people can be spotted in the shadows, with Hig and Bangley using everything at their disposal to try and fend them off and protect their community.

But the sense of stability isn't enough for the hopeful Hig. A radio signal brings him out to meet Cima (Margaret Qualley), who's helped carve out her own safe haven in the wilderness with her cautious father (Guy Pearce).

"I miss music," Cima says. "Singing on the way to the grocery store."

"I miss the grocery store," Hig laughs.

The two strangers quickly bond over the old life, but the new connection comes with a cost. The deadly survivors are getting more daring, threatening the safety of Hig, Cima and everyone they care about. It will take grit, cunning and bravery for them to fight for the life and humanity they want to build towards.

"The Dog Stars" comes to theaters and IMAX August 28.
