The blaze, dubbed the Getty Fire, was reported around 4:15 p.m. near Getty Center Drive in the Brentwood area and grew from 5 acres to approximately 20 acres by 5:45 p.m. Officials requested air and ground resources to assist crews responding to the scene.
A visible plume of smoke hovered over the surrounding area.
Firefighters battle brush fire along 405 Freeway in Sepulveda Pass
An evacuation warning was issued for an area that encompasses Promontory Road to the north, Sunset Boulevard to the south, the 405 Freeway to the east and Bundy Drive to the west. The Getty Center has been closed due to the fire, according to the museum's website.
"At this time, Getty has evacuated the Getty Center site for visitors and staff. The collections and art are safe, and we're working with the fire department on monitoring the situation," a spokesperson for the museum said.
Despite the response, lanes on the 405 Freeway remained open. The fire is burning along the southbound side of the freeway, north of the Getty Center.
The fire comes as Southern California experiences dangerously hot temperatures.
A cause for the fire remains under investigation.
