The sideshows began about 8 p.m. in the parking lot of a Ralphs supermarket in Granada Hills.
Drivers at one takeover were seen pushing cars to the limit as flames and showers of sparks shot out out from underneath their vehicles, news video showed. Meanwhile, impromptu fireworks exploded in the sky above.
Other takeovers were held in Van Nuys, Sylmar, Chatsworth and North Hollywood.
The Los Angeles Police Department said that no arrests were made and there were no reports of injuries.
