"Similar to how Acura and Lexus were upstaging traditional luxury brands, Genesis is now upstaging the existing luxury brands, including the Japanese ones that are now established," said Karl Brauer, executive analyst at iSeeCars.com.
What's impressive from both a consumer and industry standpoint is that Genesis hasn't even quite reached its 10th anniversary yet. The first couple of models were actually branded as Hyundais, but in late 2015 Genesis became its own entity.
And since then, it has continually rolled out solid competitors in the ultra-competitive arena of upscale vehicles. The newest is a revised 2026 GV70, which hits the sweet spot of premium cars. It's a reasonably-sized crossover SUV bursting with both style and technology, for a starting price of just under $50,000. There are numerous trim levels for this vehicle and even a hybrid version.
"I consider the GV70 one of the most compelling vehicles in one of the most competitive segments," Brauer cnoted.
But it's not just what's rolling out of the brand's showrooms. It's also the way Genesis is immersing its name and vehicles into lifestyle events. For some years now, Southern California's premier PGA event has been known as the Genesis Invitational.
Racing is also where high-end car branding can occur, and Genesis is headed there as well. Next year, the Genesis Magma Racing hypercar will compete at the prestigious 24 Hours of LeMans.
And not just appearing soon on the starting line, but also on the silver screen. Two Genesis models have supporting roles in the new summer movie "Freakier Friday" - yet another place to get noticed in the crowded field of luxury cars.
As a premium brand, Genesis has a pretty comprehensive lineup of vehicles right now, including a number of stylish SUV models; buyers just love those. But like other premium brands, they're also hard at work on what's coming in the future.
Two models, a sleek coupe and sleek convertible in concept form - called "X Concepts" - sure look like they're targeting the upper echelon flagships from the German brands, namely Mercedes-Benz and BMW.
"If they aren't watching their back on Genesis already, they'd better," Brauer said.
Not bad for a relative newcomer in the world of automotive luxury.
