Have you seen more spiders and bugs this year? Here's why

If you've recently dealt with a lot of spiders and bugs, you're not alone. The weather has a lot to do with the critters we see in Southern California.

It was a busy summer for Pyramid Pest Control, but spiders aren't the only pest they're seeing more of this year.

"Especially now, because of the humidity, everything is coming out more... even like gnats... So everybody's got a lot of stuff going on," said owner Davis Olivas.
Now that summer has ended, we'll see spiders into the fall, but Olivas says most of the time, we shouldn't worry about them.

"Mostly in the summer time, most of it is just garden spiders and/or what people call "daddy long legs."Those are the ones that'll be inside. They look a little creepy but they don't do anything so people freak out when they see them because they're kind of big."

Olivas added those are the "good" spiders that can also act as pest control by killing other insects. He says the types to be concerned about are rare to see and are typically in hiding - like black widows or the brown recluse spider.

"In the winter time they're hibernating and the heat is their time, just like most all bugs, like ants... usually they come out a lot in the summer because it's so hot they want to... come inside the house to cool off or water, but usually the rest of the time they're just kind of sleeping."

"Humidity brings them out because they're a little more comfortable with the humidity and the moisture," he said.

Termites also thrive in the heat and humidity. Olivas says his company has been getting close to 100 calls a day due to the uptick.
