Gerardo "Jerry" Estrada, a 30-year-old graduate of Santa Monica College, was going home after leaving work when he was struck and killed.
The crash happened Sept. 19 around 7:15 p.m. as officers were on their way to help establish a perimeter for a suspect wanted on a felony warrant, LAPD Capt. Mike Bland said.
The officers were driving northbound on Figueroa Street with emergency sirens and lights on when they crashed into Estrada, who was on a skateboard going southbound in the center median, Bland said.
Dashcam video captured the moment the patrol vehicle slammed into Estrada.
Estrada was found wedged beneath a parked car nearby, Bland said. Officers and paramedics tried to save him, but he died at the scene.
Loved ones describe Estrada as a good man who loved his community.
When the crash happened, police told Eyewitness News that the officer was not driving at an excessive speed, but an investigation will reveal how fast he was going.
