Jerry Vale, popular 1950s singer, dies at age 83

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Jerry Vale, a popular singer in the 1950s and early 1960s, died Sunday at his Palm Desert home at the age of 83.

Vale's health had been declining, according to a statement from Harold J. Levy, a family attorney. He died surrounded by family and friends.

Vale began performing in New York supper clubs as a teenager and then went on to record more than 50 albums. His recording of "The Star-Spangled Banner" in the 1960s was played at sporting events for years.

His rendition of "Volare," ''Innamorata" and "Al Di La" became classic Italian-American songs. His biggest hit was "You Don't Know Me."

Valealso appeared as himself in the movies "Goodfellas," "Casino" and in the TV series "The Sopranos."



Vale leaves behind his wife of 55 years, a son and a daughter.
