LANCASTER, Calif. (KABC) -- A man was hospitalized after being shot by sheriff's deputies in Lancaster on Labor Day, but details about what led to the shooting were scarce.

Deputies responded to the 44000 block of 15th Street West just before 10 a.m. Monday, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

The suspect was struck by gunfire and taken to a local hospital. No deputies were injured, the department said.

No further information was immediately provided.

One witness said she was able to see what happened outside her home.

"I could see right before they, he pulled up, he had walked in between the cars with a gun. They told him 'put the gun down, put the gun down' at that first car right there and then another one pulled up and they was telling him to put the gun down, put the gun down. That's when they had taken a knee. And they said "shots fired!" the witness said.

The investigation is ongoing.
