Los Angeles couple held in Qatar sue company that sent them

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- The Los Angeles couple who were held in Qatar for years before they were cleared in the death of their 8-year-old adopted daughter have sued the engineering firm that sent them overseas.

Matt and Grace Huang filed the lawsuit against MWH Global on Monday. The suit claims the company failed to provide cultural training and later fired Matt Huang.

The Huangs moved to Qatar in 2012 after Matthew Huang was hired to work as an engineer for the 2022 World Cup in Doha. They had adopted their daughter, Gloria, from Ghana when she was 4 years old.

The Qatar government accused the couple of starving Gloria to death. However, supporters of the couple said the child suffered eating disorders due to past malnourishment before she was adopted.

The Huangs were arrested in January 2013 following Gloria's death.

After spending nearly a year in jail, their child endangerment convictions were overturned and they were allowed to leave Qatar last week.

MWH says it checked on the family's welfare and spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on Matt Huang's defense. It also says Huang resigned.

The Huangs, of Asian descent, have two other African-born adopted children who left Qatar during the trial to live with relatives in the U.S.
