LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- With the Fourth of July just over a week away, city and county officials are issuing a stark warning about illegal fireworks.

"If you basically want to engage in this incredibly dangerous and risky activity in our county, we have a cell door with your name on it," Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman said during a press conference on Wednesday.

Dozens of illegal fireworks have been seized this year in both the city of Los Angeles and the county. Last month, a deadly explosion in the Jefferson Park neighborhood led to a large seizure.

Hochman emphasized that his office is going after those who are making, selling, and using illegal fireworks in the county. He also noted that some of those who have been arrested are already going to trial.

"If you're busted for having illegal fireworks, you're facing a minimum $1,000 fine and six months in jail," he said.

But there could also be a deadly toll-and that's what first responders want you to avoid.

"Illegal fireworks are extremely harmful," said Los Angeles Fire Deputy Chief Stephen Gutierrez. "They are unpredictable, and they can cause catastrophic fires and fatal injuries."

The LAPD will be out in force, including using drones on the Fourth of July to patrol the streets.

Fines could increase depending on how much was confiscated. Also, remember that in the city of Los Angeles, all fireworks are illegal.
