The incident happened around 9 p.m. Wednesday near the intersection of Broadway and Rosecrans Avenue, according to the L.A. Police Department.
The officers initiated a traffic stop on a white Chevy sedan, and as the car came to a stop, the suspect "immediately shot at the officers," prompting them to return fire, authorities said.
It's unclear if the suspect was struck, but both officers sustained injuries. One of them suffered a bullet graze wound to the head and the other was injured by shattered glass.
The officers followed the suspect who fled the scene but they eventually lost sight of the car. AIR7 was over the scene and captured several police vehicles in the area as crime-scene tape cordoned off a large portion of the street.
The white Chevy was last seen traveling north on Broadway from 135th Street.
The injured officers were taken to the hospital in stable condition.
