School district facing legal action over alleged nude photos incident at Calabasas High School

CALABASAS, Calif. (KABC) -- The Las Virgenes Unified School District is facing legal action after a student allegedly took nude photographs of a classmate, manipulated them and then sent them out to other students at school.

The family of the female student victim says the district failed to respond adequately to repeated reports of harassment and bullying over seven months.

"I don't think that anyone should have to experience something like what I experienced. Feeling lonely, traumatized, embarrassed," the now-17-year-old victim said.

"For months, my daughter was silenced while the district turned a blind eye. This lawsuit isn't just about justice... it's about protecting every student who's ever been dismissed, ignored, or retraumatized," the victim's mother said in a statement.

The incident happened almost two years ago at Calabasas High School.

The victim said the female student, who was a former friend, secretly filmed her while in the shower. In other cases, the victim alleges the student used artificial intelligence to put her face on other people's bodies -- some of the images ended up on a pornographic website.

"I never thought that if I left the door cracked a little open because my shower gets too steamy that pictures of me would end up all over my school. It was terrifying," the teen victim told Eyewitness News last year.

"We are pursuing justice, not just for this child, but to ensure that what happened to her does not happen to any other student," attorney Samuel Dordulian said.

Dordulian said the family is suing for unspecified damages and to ensure the Las Virgenes Unified School District changes its policy regarding disciplining students immediately who post unflattering, sexual photos or AI-generated images of a fellow student on social media.

The attorney claims the district allowed the student to remain in school for months without taking any action while the victim spiraled into depression and mental anguish.

"I do agree 100% with my daughter that this was swept under the rug because of her race, and I just want to be clear that this district failed us," said the victim's mother, Jacqueline Smith.

The 17-year-old victim has now left Calabasas High School and will finish high school elsewhere.

"It was a really traumatizing and embarrassing experience for me. It has changed me, matured me. I'm constantly looking over my shoulder, wondering who knows what about me," the victim said.

At the time of the incident, another mother came forward and told ABC7 that her daughter, who was also a student at Calabasas High School, was bullied by the same girl who took the images after she spoke out against the photos.

In response to the lawsuit, the superintendent sent Eyewitness News the following statement:

"Student safety is our number one priority. When the allegations of off-campus conduct were brought to our administration's attention, we immediately reported the information to the Lost Hills Sheriff's Department.LASD took the matter seriously and mobilized the special victims unit to investigate.LASD conducted a thorough and full investigation."
