The district noted that many areas are likely to see near-record temperatures during the heat wave.
Protective measures announced Tuesday by the district include:
-- modification of schedules for recess and lunch to minimize outdoor exposure;
-- rescheduling or modifying schedules for high-school athletic events and outdoor clubs;
-- ensuring air conditioners are functioning, and preparing portable units if needed;
-- relocating students to cooler spaces if air conditioners fail in classrooms;
-- closing doors and windows to maintain cooler temperatures;
-- providing frequent water breaks;
-- monitoring and adjusting physical activities; and
-- limiting the use of hot surfaces such as asphalt, concrete and artificial turf to cooler early hours.
Students were also urged to wear breathable, light-colored and loose- fitting clothing, to apply sunscreen and wear hats while outdoors, and to stay hydrated.
Students who experience symptoms of heat-related illness such as fatigue, dehydration or muscle cramps should report them immediately to a teacher or coach.
