LAX hit with flight cancellations as historic blizzard slams Northeast

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- While Los Angeles is not seeing the level of flight disruptions affecting parts of the East Coast, nearly 150 flights at LAX were canceled on Monday as a nationwide ripple effect from severe winter weather continued.

Heavy snow piling up across the Northeast has grounded flights around the country. More than 10,000 flights have been canceled through Tuesday, with airports in New York, New Jersey, Boston and Philadelphia experiencing the most significant impacts.

Travelers leaving LAX for destinations back East said they were hoping their flights would stay on schedule.

"It's cold in Chicago, but not that much snow. So, I think we should be fine. I hope so," Ony Achufusi of Chicago told Eyewitness News.

Tim Wulf of Wisconsin said the weather had not disrupted his travel plans.

"Had zero impact so far, knock on wood," he said. "As long as our flight takes off on time, should not be a problem. (O'Hare International Airport) is always a mess when it's winter. It's just what it is."

Dan and Heidi Sharry, returning to Boston after a vacation in Hawaii, said they expect at least three inches of snow waiting for them at home. But they added that the journey to Los Angeles was the bigger challenge after they missed their connecting flight due to a three-hour delay blamed on missing crew members.

"And then we got here and we ran to the gate with a connecting flight and watched the plane back out of the gate," Heidi said.

"Could almost reach out and touch it," Dan added.

Jet Blue has been the hardest hit airline, with more than 81% of flights canceled.
