The 26-year-old singer and rapper from Atlanta, whose real name is Montero Hill, appeared in a Van Nuys courtroom on three felony counts of battery with injury against a police officer and a single count of resisting an executive officer.
His bail was set at $75,000. As a condition to being released on bail, Hill must attend four Narcotics Anonymous meetings per week or attend outpatient treatment.
The Grammy-winning artist was arrested Thursday after he was seen walking nearly nude down the street in a video recorded by a passing driver. He was also hospitalized for a possible overdose.
The footage was provided to the entertainment website TMZ.
When officers arrived at the scene, Hill charged toward them, an LAPD spokesperson said.
His father briefly spoke to reporters outside of court.
"Like I said, y'all, keep praying for him. Keep praying for him," his father, Robert Stafford, said.
After charging at arriving police, he was taken into custody, but the officers, suspecting a drug overdose, took him to a hospital first, an LAPD spokesperson said. There was no further word on his condition, but he was released from the hospital and taken to jail after just a few hours.
"I think he senses that people care about him right now. I mean, you know, being in a county jail is a crappy place to be, but I think it is really a moment where you realize you have to address whatever happened," Hill's attorney, Drew Findling, said. "But at the same time, he knows there's an outpouring of support and love for him, and that's going to make anybody feel good at their darkest day, because this has to be his darkest day right now."
His next court hearing is set for mid-September.
Hill is best known for his 2018 hit "Old Town Road," which merged country and hip-hop. It spent a record 19 weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Known for his genre-bending, innovating sounds and style, his first full studio album, 2021's "Montero," went to No. 2 on the Billboard album chart and was nominated for a Grammy for album of the year.
