The Los Angeles City Fire Department responded to the fire. At least 77 firefighters were assigned to the blaze.
The department was concerned about 55-gallon drums exploding. The department described possible "exotic" metals that may be fire/water reactive at the scene. There were reports of explosions at the scene.
The fire was extinguished by 9:03 p.m., according to the department.
No injuries were reported. There was no structural damage at the location, the department said. The bulk of the flames were in an auto-dismantling yard. Nearby storage of 55-gallon plastic barrels containing pickles and brine caught fire and added to the smoke.
No evacuations were ordered.
The cause of the fire was under investigation.
