Los Angeles City Council to declare Celia Cruz Day in honor of salsa legend

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- The Los Angeles City Council will be honoring the life and legacy of the one and only Celia Cruz, also known as the "Queen of Salsa."

Next week, Councilman Hugo Soto-Martinez will proclaim Oct. 17 as Celia Cruz Day in honor of the Cuban singer and Latin music icon.

A special presentation will be held at City Hall.

Cruz electrified audiences for over half a century, earning multiple Grammy Awards and selling millions of records worldwide. Cruz died in 2003 and last year became the first Afro-Latino to appear on a U.S. quarter.

Cruz would have turned 100 this year.
