Mailers already being sent to California voters against redistricting plan

Tuesday, August 26, 2025
The California redistricting effort has caught the ire of President Donald Trump, who threatened to sue the state over the initiative on Monday.

Now, opposition mailers are arriving in the mailboxes of California voters, trying to sway them before the November special election.

If you've received mailers urging a "no" vote on California's redistricting response to Texas, you're not alone. Some arrived in mailboxes even before the California legislature voted to support the effort.

One of the mailers quoted the League of Women Voters of California president, making it seem like the organization endorsed the "no" campaign.

"I think this is an unfortunate thing that can happen is that somebody comes forward, they write an op-ed, maybe even in their personal capacity, that they're concerned about what's happening with this process. Then, these billionaire-funded mailers come out, quoting them, making it seem like this is a mailer from the League of Women Voters," said Paul Mitchell, the owner of Redistricting Partners, who helped draw California's new maps.

In a statement, the League of Women Voters said, in part:

"We stand with our sister league in Texas, and leagues in other states, in opposing all attempts to gerrymander congressional lines on a partisan basis. California's independent redistricting commission is the gold standard - a national model for fair elections, community input, and transparency. We understand the threat authoritarianism poses, but the way to fight it is not by breaking our own democratic safeguards. You don't save democracy by imitating those who seek to destroy it - you save it by inspiring voters with bold ideas and principled leadership."

On Monday, President Trump said his administration will soon have a response to California's temporary maps.

"I'm going to be filing a lawsuit pretty soon, and I think we're going to be very successful in it. We're going to be filing it through the DOJ. That's going to happen," Trump said.

In a post on X, California Governor Gavin Newsom responded to Trump's comments, saying, "Bring it."

Newsom is also selling new merchandise that promotes California's mid-decade redistricting campaign by continuing to troll Trump.

"We wanted to make sure that we could do something to push back on Texas without breaking the entire map and doing some crazy gerrymandering. 80% of the voters in the state will find themselves being in the same district. They'll notice no difference," Mitchell said.

Republicans in Sacramento have continued their fight against the new maps. On Monday, they asked the California Supreme Court to block Prop 50, accusing the legislature of violating the state constitution's redistricting rules.
