Sheriff's deputies responded to the 2500 block of Maynard Drive just before 7 p.m. Wednesday after receiving a call about a domestic assault.
When they arrived, they saw a man subduing another man on the street and a woman standing near them. The man being subdued was unconscious, according to investigators.
"Paramedics arrived shortly after, rendered medical aid and transported the unconscious male to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead," said the sheriff's department.
According to investigators, the man who died was the ex-boyfriend of the woman.
He was physically assaulting her when the other man intervened, detectives told Eyewitness News. The ex-boyfriend attacked the man who intervened with a tire iron, according to the sheriff's department.
"A struggle ensued between the two males for possession of the tire iron," said LASD. "The struggle resulted in the deceased male falling to ground, being subdued by the male resident, and deceased male subsequently going unconscious."
Investigators confirmed everyone involved knew each other, though further details weren't released.
The man who intervened was detained and released pending further investigation.
