Firefighters extinguished the flames, which were believed to have started in the kitchen.
Firefighters believe conditions in the man's home may have hindered his escape from the blaze.
"We do know that the house was -- I don't want to call it pack-rat conditions -- but it was very unorganized in there," one firefighter said.
