More jobs in Hollywood? Here's what we learned at this year's 'State of the State' forum

HOLLYWOOD, LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- With California entering a new fiscal year, what's going on in Hollywood?

State legislators gathered Thursday for the State of the State of Hollywood forum, an annual event that analyzes where things stand.

One major highlight: jobs in show business.

The California lawmakers who were a part of the event are especially proud of last month's expansion of the state's film and television tax credit program.

The goal is to keep the work that Hollywood is known for making in Hollywood.

"The state government is really determined to ensure that we're doing what we need to do to bring Hollywood production back," said Senator Ben Allen.

Last month, Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a $750 million film and TV tax credit, up from $330 million.

"One of the things I'm really optimistic about is now we've got a competitive program, and we can start to bring jobs back into Hollywood, jobs that we're losing to other states and other countries," said State Assemblymember Rick Chavez Zbur.

State Senator Maria Elena Durazo, who was also a part of Thursday's conversation, said it's about working people and figuring out ways to help them, making sure those jobs stay in L.A.

The politicians represent several local areas, but they all have a hand in Hollywood, which is why the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce believes the forum is an important event to hold every year.

"This is an opportunity to bring civic leaders and individuals and entities from the community together and meet face-to-face with our elected representatives and be able to talk to them in a much more casual, informal setting," said Hollywood Chamber of Commerce President Steve Nissen.

While Thursday's talk was about what's happening right now, the future is very much on their minds.

"We're going to be welcoming the world next year with the World Cup, and then two years after that with the Olympics," said Allen. "We've got the Super Bowl coming, we've got some incredibly important global events, especially the Olympics coming up in just a couple of years. So we know that the world's eyes are going to be on us."

The panel also addressed the January wildfires and how they've been addressing recovery needs, including trying to help accelerate rebuilding efforts and providing support services to residents.
