LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- The Oscar-winning documentary short, "The Last Repair Shop," tells the story of the devoted people who help keep 80,000 musical instruments working for students in the Los Angeles Unified School District.

Music legend Herb Alpert got his start playing the trumpet as a student in the LAUSD. Now he's donating $1 million to the school district's musical instrument repair shop.

Ben Proudfoot, who directed the film with Kris Bowers, confirmed the donation.

"We are deeply grateful to the Herb Alpert Foundation for this extraordinary gift," Sadie Stockdale Jefferson, executive director of the LAUSD Foundation, said in a statement.

"Their generosity is a powerful reminder of how philanthropy can transform lives - opening doors for young people, fueling their creativity, and ensuring that every student in LAUSD has access to the arts and opportunities they deserve," the statement went on to say. "When our community comes together in this way, it shows what's possible for public education in Los Angeles."
