Newest 4D immersive experience showcases the Ford Mustang

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- From outside, it looks like just another commercial building in downtown L.A.'s Arts District, but inside, it's like a cross between a museum and an amusement park attraction.

The "American Icon - Mustang Immersive Experience" is opening courtesy of the newest 4D projection technology.

"What it allows now is in real life to get closer than ever before to a subject," said Ian Cohen of Ford Communications during ABC7's preview tour.

That subject, in this case, is the Ford Mustang.

These larger-than-life exhibitions aren't new. Previously, you've been able to dive into the art of Vincent Van Gogh or experience the Titanic. For this newest immersion, Ford's iconic sporty car is the star.

"It's so engrained in American culture, and thus worldwide culture, that people recognize it just by name and by the look," said Ted Ryan, who leads Ford Motor Company's archives and heritage. "When you say 'Mustang,' you don't have to say 'Ford Mustang.' People know exactly what you're talking about."

In the first immersion room, you're transported back to the earliest model as the assembly plant rushes by behind and to the sides of a pristine early '65 Mustang coupe. The car's story is further showcased by a reflection of the fast-changing culture in the '60s, also projected onto the walls and floor.

In the next room, it's more modern times as the newest Mustang continues the journey with the background surrounding you, while the car rotates on a turntable in relation to which direction the background is quickly moving. Seats are even provided for those who may get motion sickness.

Ford says that many people have a Mustang story because over the past 60 years, so many people have owned that car over the generations.

But even if you never owned one, you may have a different connection to it because you've seen various Mustang models many times on the big screen, and the small screen.

For example, each week in the early '70s, viewers of the Mary Tyler Moore show saw her in Minneapolis in a rather ordinary Mustang coupe during the opening credits.

Later, the character Mary Richards traded up to a blue convertible in Season 3 episodes. Ford now owns that exact Mustang, and has it on display at the exhibit.

And who could forget "Eleanor" from the remake of "Gone in 60 Seconds." The sleek, gray fastback is part of the Hollywood gallery, too.

Next, you go into a theater for a motion-enhanced ride. It's like you're inside an action-packed video game! It may remind you of "Soarin' Over California" at Disney California Adventure Park.

"It's Disney-like. It's 'Soaring' like," noted Cohen with a smile.

So bring your phone, your imagination, and a fairly strong stomach. The exhibit runs through January before it moves on to other cities.

Adult admission starts at $26.
