Los Angeles County Fire Department personnel were called at 2:15 a.m. to the Saugus neighborhood, on Cinema Drive and Bouquet Canyon Road, where they found a Tesla engulfed in flames, a spokesperson for the fire department said
News video from the scene shows the Tesla sedan destroyed in the fire after driving off the road and slamming into a traffic signal pole.
The male driver was pronounced dead at the scene by fire department personnel. The LAPD confirmed he was an off-duty officer. His name was not immediately released.
Deputies remained at the scene for several hours investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash, the sheriff's department said. Investigators believe speed may have been a factor.
Hours later, there was another deadly crash in the same area involving a pickup truck that also crashed into a power pole. A passenger was killed, and the driver was airlifted to the hospital. Speed may also have been a factor in that incident, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.
