PACIFIC GROVE, Calif. (KABC) -- Authorities are searching for three people who were aboard a small plane that crashed off the central California coast.

The private twin-engine plane crashed just after 10:30 p.m. Saturday about 200 to 300 yards off of Point Pinos, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.

The aircraft took off from the San Carlos Airport and was headed to the Monterey Regional Airport.

Multiple agencies, including the Monterey County Sheriff's Office, have been searching for debris in the ocean.

Video obtained by our sister station in San Francisco shows the plane's wheel and other parts washed ashore at State Beach Sunday morning.

Residents said the noise from the crash startled the neighborhood.

"Last thing we heard was a thump and we threw everything on, went running out of the house, and I think there was probably already at least 20 to 30 people down here that heard the same thing," said Ron Beach, a resident.

The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the cause of the crash.
