Palisades high students return to class at former Sears building following wildfire

SANTA MONICA, Calif. (KABC) -- Palisades Charter High School students returned to class Wednesday, but they didn't go to their campus - they showed up at a former department store in Santa Monica.

The Palisades Fire in January caused extensive damage to their school.

They held remote classes after the fire, but in April, the school relocated to a former Sears store on 4th Street and finished off the previous school year.

"It was challenging for sure... just adjusting to a new campus and having to deal with new classes and rooms and moving around everywhere," said senior Owen Fisher. "It was a challenge, but we got through it."

While their school is being rebuilt, some 2,500 students will attend classes at the refurbished multi-story building for the first semester of the school year.

"We did not want to go back to a virtual learning environment. We felt like kids had already gone through enough disruption last year," said Dr. Pam Magee, the school's principal. "We just said let's stay here until we know our campus is going to be ready to reopen."

The students are choosing to tackle adversity and their new campus with a positive attitude.

"We are a testimony to coming back together during difficult times and I'm so thankful to be part of this rebuilding process," said Alessandra Santini, senior and ASB president.

Magee says that the rebuilding process is well underway at Pali High, with the goal of transitioning back to their beloved campus in January - just in time for the spring semester.

Meanwhile, the school is still accepting donations for the rebuilding process.
