LEIMERT PARK, LOS ANGELES (CNS) -- A pedestrian was struck and killed by a Metro Expo light rail train south of the Leimert Park neighborhood and police Tuesday are investigating the circumstances surrounding the victim's death.

Los Angeles Police Department officers responded to 2600 block of Exposition Boulevard and Seventh Avenue, east of Expo/Crenshaw Boulevard Station at 12:05 a.m. Tuesday. According to police, the train was traveling west on Exposition when it collided with the pedestrian near the tracks, an LAPD spokesman told City News Service.

Los Angeles Fire Department personnel were called to the scene, where they pronounced the victim dead.

A Metro spokesman said normal train operations resumed on the line as of 5 a.m. Tuesday

"At approximately 11:50 p.m. (Monday), a southbound Metro E Line train made contact with a trespasser walking on the track between the Expo/Crenshaw and Expo/Western Station, resulting in a fatality.

"Metro extends its heartfelt condolences to the deceased's family and friends," the transit authority said in a statement.

"Metro encourages the public to observe rail safety guidance and reminds pedestrians that they should only cross tracks at marked street crossings with signals to help ensure their safe passage," the spokesman added

The LAPD's South Traffic Division will be in charge of the investigation of the pedestrian's death.
