The incident began around 7 p.m. when Culver City police officers started chasing a vehicle through Culver City and into Los Angeles. The Los Angeles Police Department assisted in the pursuit.
During the pursuit, Culver City Police Department spokeswoman Jennifer Atenza said the driver ran red lights and drove on the wrong side of the road. She added that the suspect was possibly armed with a knife and that the vehicle had been involved in a carjacking.
Six pedestrians were hit during the incident, Atenza said. Two of them were hit before the chase started, and the rest were hit as the suspect fled from police.
The extent of their injuries or conditions is unknown. Multiple cars were also hit during the chase.
Atenza said the driver appeared to be intentionally trying to hit pedestrians.
Culver City police chase leaves multiple pedestrians injured
"I don't know what his motivation was or what the thought process was," Atenza said. "What we do know is he was acting recklessly and dangerously and putting lives in jeopardy in our city."
The chase ended when the suspect crashed at a McDonald's drive-thru, where officers took the driver into custody, police said. An officer was injured at the end of the chase but is in stable condition with injuries that are not life-threatening, Atenza said.
The suspect was taken to a hospital for treatment of minor injuries. He's now facing a long list of charges including attempted murder.
An investigation is ongoing.
