RIVERSIDE, Calif. (KABC) -- Riverside County law enforcement is investigating an attack on a wild burro near Moreno Valley, shot by someone armed with a bow and arrow.

A photo released by the non-profit group DonkeyLand Rescue showed the burro with an arrow lodged in its midsection. A veterinarian with SoCal Equine Hospital in Norco said the burro has been operated on, and is recovering.

Donkeyland said this is the 6th burro shot with an arrow.

"It makes me mad," said resident Bud Smitheram. "I'd like to catch them myself."

The incident happened earlier this week, in a rural area near Pigeon Pass Road and Quail Call Road. According to DonkeyLand, it's the sixth such attack they've seen recently.

"I think it's some kid who has a weird mentality or something, but I think it's pretty cruel myself," said Smitheram.

Other residents are also concerned with passersby who stop alongside the road to interact with and feed the burros, which makes them more curious and less afraid of humans.

"It's just kind of crazy," said Connie Westervoorde. "The burros will run out in front of cars chasing each other. But when someone is shooting them, they're doing it out of sport and it's just not right."

DonkeyLand is offering a $14,000 reward for information leading to the identification, arrest and conviction of those responsible for this attack.

Anyone with information on the person or persons responsible for any of the recent attacks is asked to call Riverside County Animal Services.
