LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Dr. Lucy Jones, one of the world's most famous seismologists, spoke with Eyewitness news on how residents can be prepared for the next big earthquake.
Anytime a major earthquake has hit, Jones has been the face of seismology to explain the temblor. She retired earlier this year, but has not stopped raising awareness for earthquake safety.

Jones has worked with Mayor Eric Garcetti to create a plan to better prepare Los Angeles for a massive quake. But she also wants to make sure other cities in the region are just as prepared.
"We can't just do earthquake safety right here. It really is a regional issue," she said.
She will be holding seminars with government officials throughout Southern California to help them understand what they can do before the big one strikes.

Some examples of being better prepared include checking the foundation of your home or building if it was made before 1997.
Jones said there is no way to predict when a massive temblor will strike Southern California.
