SANTA MONICA, LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Shocking video shows a large white shark swimming near the Santa Monica Pier on Thursday morning.

Carlos Gauna, known as "The Malibu Artist", posted the video to his YouTube page.

He says he used a drone to track the shark from Topanga south to the pier at around 11 a.m. He says at the time, there were only a few people at the beach.

The shark came within about 50 yards of shore, not too far from a paddleboarder.

"This is not necessarily a rare event. Numbers-wise, the area is known as a juvenile white shark nursery. So, the Santa Monica Bay has a lot of juvenile white sharks. That's what it's known for," Gauna said. "But, in the summer, you do get these large adults that just come right through."

Gauna says he films sharks daily, which is evident on his YouTube page.

He made sure to alert a lifeguard, saying it's something he often does when he spots a shark close to shore.
