Investigation underway after boxer Mylik Birdsong killed in South LA drive-by shooting

SOUTH LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- A local professional boxer has been identified as the man killed in a drive-by shooting in South Los Angeles.

The incident happened just before 5 p.m. Sunday at 87th Street and Denker Avenue, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

Investigators say the victim was fatally shot about seven times by someone in a dark SUV. He was taken to the hospital but did not survive.

Though he hasn't been officially identified, Mylik Birdsong's mother told Eyewitness News that her son was the victim. He was scheduled to fight on Oct. 26.

No arrests have been made.
