LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Los Angeles mayoral candidate Spencer Pratt is living in Santa Barbara County after losing his home in the Palisades Fire, leading some critics to question his eligibility to run for office in L.A.

The City Clerk's Office says candidates were required to be registered to vote in L.A. and be residents of the city by Jan. 3, according to a report from the L.A. Times.

Pratt says he has been living at his father's rental home in Carpinteria, about 12 miles south of Santa Barbara, but his burned-out lot is still his legal residence.

According to the L.A. Times report, Pratt and his wife, reality star and singer Heidi Pratt, both listed a Carpinteria address linked to Pratt's parents on their voter registrations. Pratt listed it as his mailing address, while Heidi listed it as her mailing address and residence.

In a video posted to social media on Monday, Pratt said he decided to run for mayor three months ago and wasn't thinking about what zip code he needed to stay in in order to run for mayor.

"I wasn't thinking, 'I really need to make sure I stay in this ZIP Code in case I run for mayor,'" he said in the video.

He added that he moved a trailer onto his Palisades lot and is waiting for it to be connected to power.

Pratt announced his run for L.A. mayor on the anniversary of the Palisades Fire in January, which destroyed his home. He is running his campaign with a focus on criticizing the city government's response to the fire that destroyed his home.

He rose to fame in 2007 when he began dating "The Hills" cast member Heidi Montag, and eventually became a regular on the series. The couple married the following year, and they have two children.

The couple has also appeared on shows including "I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here" and the British version of "Celebrity Big Brother."
