The Eaton, Palisades and other fires disrupted tens of thousands of lives in California. Gathering and preparing yearly tax information almost impossible for some.
That's why the Internal Revenue Service tax filing and payment extension was given to L.A. County residents.
But that six-month grace period is now coming to an end. The same Oct. 15 deadline applies to California state taxes.
For filers who owe money but can't pay in full, the IRS recommends setting up an installment plan.
Meanwhile, the ongoing U.S. government shutdown may impact IRS help lines and other services. But taxpayers are still liable for any taxes owed.
"Following the disaster declaration issued by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), individuals and households that reside or have a business in Los Angeles County qualify for tax relief," the IRS said in an updated statement released in February. "The declaration permits the IRS to postpone certain tax-filing and tax-payment deadlines for taxpayers who reside or have a business in the disaster area. Accordingly, certain deadlines falling on or after Jan. 7, 2025, and before Oct. 15, 2025, are postponed until Oct. 15, 2025."
