Veterans Affairs Real Estate Professionals help woman find dream home in Adelanto

ADELANTO, Calif. (KABC) -- Alba Flores and her husband are ecstatic to be homeowners for the first time.

"My daughter went crazy, she was running around from room to room. My husband was excited. We were speechless when we saw the house," she said.

Flores has served in the National Guard for 12 years. She's deployed all over the world, but she says finding her own home in America was tough.

"I've been looking for over two, three months and I found VA Rep and it helped me get this home," she said.

Juan Pena is the Los Angeles President of Veterans Affairs Real Estate Professionals. He's a veteran who served as a Marine Corps Sergeant in Iraq.

"There are over 345,000 registered veterans here in L.A. County and a big percentage of them have no idea what they actually qualify for or what their benefits are," Pena said.

The group hosts summits to teach veterans about their housing options and help them apply for VA home benefit loans on the spot. Pena says most veterans are surprised by all the help that is available.

"Most of them feel that they cannot qualify or because of their credit standing, they cannot get a home loan. Well, that's not true," Pena said. "In most cases, the VA product itself is so flexible that it makes it a lot easier for that veteran to qualify.

Alba encourages other vets to pursue their dreams of home ownership.

A housing summit will be held Saturday at the West Angeles Community Development Center at 6030 Crenshaw Boulevard from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
