WHITTIER, Calif. (KABC) -- A 7-year-old child is in critical condition after being stabbed multiple times by his brother in Whittier, the sheriff's department said.

Authorities say there was a family disturbance at the 9600 block of Ben Hur Avenue just after 10 p.m. A 24-year-old man was "having withdrawals from his psych medication" and stabbed his brother seven times, the Norwalk sheriff's station told ABC7.

Details surrounding what led up to the incident remains under investigation, though sheriff's officials revealed that the attack was not provoked.

The suspect fled the scene, but was taken into custody a block away without further incident, a deputy said. He was taken into custody and booked for attempted murder.

The 7-year-old remains hospitalized. He's expected to survive.

Area residents said they hope the 24-year-old receives the mental health help he needs.

"This is tragic. I mean, it's his little brother...I'm sure nobody would intentionally do that unless they had an episode, right? So let's get him the help he needs," said Michael Yanatovic, a neighbor.
