The violent crash occurred near the intersection of Normandie and West 60th Place at about 11:20 p.m. Sunday when an SUV traveling at a high rate of speed after fleeing from a collision crashed into a small sedan carrying a family of four, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.
The force of the impact sent the sedan into a street sign and fence, LAPD said. Some good Samaritans jumped in to help remove all four occupants from the smoking car.
The male driver died at the scene. The Los Angeles Fire Department transported the mother and two sisters, ranging from 2 to 5 years old, to a nearby hospital where the oldest of the two girls died, LAPD said. The woman and younger child were listed in critical condition.
The child remains fighting for her life in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, police said.
The driver of the SUV, described as a 22-year-old man by LAFD, was also taken to the hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. He faces possible Murder/Gross Vehicular Manslaughter charges.
Authorities have not identified any of the victims or the driver of the SUV.
The incident remains under investigation.
