The shooting took place near 40th Place and Walton Avenue after a call to police was made about a man with a knife. There were also separate reports concerning a woman being stabbed, but police were unable to confirm those accounts.
Police responded to the calls. What happened next had many residents shaken.
"I was here having a meeting with my granddaughter and then all of a sudden we heard like 12 shots: boom, boom, boom -- one right after the other, pretty powerful," said witness Robin Hernandez. "Then within maybe a few minutes we had the helicopters. The police driving by secured the area."

Police said it's unclear exactly what transpired in the moments leading up to the shooting. The suspect was shot multiple times by more than one officer, according to LAPD Sgt. Frank Preciado. "We may have as many as three," Preciado said of the officers involved.
Nearby Manual Arts High School was briefly placed on lockdown. The school was not involved in the shooting, Los Angeles Unified School District officials said.
