Student stabbed at high school in South LA; suspect detained, police say

JEFFERSON PARK, LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Police are investigating a stabbing at a Los Angeles high school that left one student injured.

Police responded to J.P. Widney High School, also known as the Widney Career Preparatory & Transition Center, Tuesday after receiving reports of a stabbing.

The student was transported to a local hospital to be treated, police said.

It's unclear what led up to the stabbing but police said the suspect - also a student - has been detained. Further details weren't immediately available.

Police and fire department officials are on the campus gathering more information. No other injuries were reported.

Happening on just the second day of school, the incident left some parents on edge.

"It's scary," said parent Lina Augustine. "We want our students to be safe. For something like that to happen on the second day, it's really scary. We don't know what to think anymore."
