The suspect, who has not been identified, exited the business as the deputies arrived.
According to the sheriff's department, the suspect pulled out a knife and stabbed the deputy who then shot the suspect. The confrontation happened in the gym's parking lot.
The deputy and the suspect were transported to hospitals, authorities said. Eyewitness News was told the deputy suffered non-life threatening injuries but the condition of the suspect remains unknown.

A barber at Heavy Hitters Barbershop, which is just a few doors down from the gym, saw the aftermath of the incident and described a chaotic scene.
"I was cutting hair and then all I heard was like a loud bang," he said. "We had the music on, it was pretty loud, and then I came out ... and we just seen people scattering over there by In-Shape. The helicopter came then the ambulance came. They went in and out and then the helicopter was at the fairgrounds, and I just seen them take off. Hopefully, [the deputy] is OK because it was crazy. It all happened so quick ... with everything going on right now ... terrorist threats. It's no joke."
The incident remains under investigation.
