LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- The most iconic symbol of the United States is the American Flag. As the 250th anniversary of the United States approaches, a commemorative flag often tied to Betsy Ross featuring 13 stars and stripes is being presented to communities across the country.

WoodmenLife, an Omaha based company, is delivering replicas of the Betsy Ross flag with the number 250 on it to schools, community groups, first responders and organizations.

"It's important to remember our history while also recognize the diverse communities that continue to contribute to America's future," said Kenny Kim of WoodmenLife. "We look for organizations that make a positive impact on our communities and share values such as service, leadership and civic engagement."

Among the groups selected to receive one of the special flags is the Los Angeles Korean Festival Foundation which celebrates Korean culture.

"I feel like it's a flag that doesn't just represent the U.S. but it's a flag that represents the world," said Yonah Hong with the L.A. Korean Festival Foundation. "We have a history of the Korean War. If it wasn't for the U.S. soldiers coming to our country, Korea wouldn't have their freedom that we have today. It's an honor because I think U.S. flag really represents the freedom."

Hong says the foundation is honored to receive one of the special flags: "As an Asian American, as a Korean American, or any other race or ethnic groups that are out there, just to kind of say that we're very proud to be U.S. citizens and we're very proud to live in this country."
