Lawmaker proposes "Caren Act" in San Francisco to make racially-motivated 911 reports illegal

Supervisor Shamann Walton plans to introduce an ordinance to amend the San Francisco Police Code to prevent discriminatory emergency calls based on the person's race, ethnicity, religious affiliation, gender, sexual orientation, or gender identity.

SAN FRANCISCO (KABC) -- A California lawmaker is proposing the "Caren Act," which would make racially-motivated 911 reports illegal.

It stands for "Caution Against Racially Exploitive Non-emergencies."

The fines would be severe for anyone who calls 911 to make a false report about someone because of their race.
