Homeless encampment near Esperanza Elementary School in Westlake finally cleaned up

WESTLAKE DISTRICT, LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- There is nothing the 7 On Your Side Investigates team loves more than a great before and after.

Last week along the sidewalk near LAUSD's Esperanza Elementary School, there was a growing homeless encampment parents and children had been complaining about for months.

Elementary students were dodging needles and swerving around human waste all while avoiding encampment residents slumped over and passed out.

The encampment was off Wilshire Boulevard in Los Angeles' Westlake neighborhood.

But now the tents have been torn down, and the sidewalk has been scrubbed clean.

We also spotted new signs making it clear no sleeping or private property is allowed within 500 feet of that school.

After 7 On Your Side reached out last week, Mayor Karen Bass' office told us outreach teams would move to clear this encampment.

We followed up Wednesday, and they kept their word!

This dramatic before and after is in Council District 1, represented by Eunisses Hernandez.

"We are going to be in conversations with our outreach teams to keep an eye on it," Councilmember Hernandez told 7 On Your Side when asked how her office is going to prevent the encampment from returning.

"I will not tolerate that. Families and students should be able to walk to home, to work and to school safely," she added.

That encampment has been cleaned up before only to return a few times.

So of course, 7 On Your Side Investigates will keep an eye on it too.
