'Leno's Law' aimed at easing classic car smog requirements in California fails

SACRAMENTO, Callif. (KABC) -- Comedian Jay Leno's push to relax smog rules for classic cars has fallen short.

The former "The Tonight Show" host's star power wasn't enough to convince a California legislative committee to pass a measure allowing classic car owners to be fully exempt from the state's rigorous smog-check requirements.

The Assembly Appropriations Committee blocked Bakersfield Republican Sen. Shannon Grove's Senate Bill 712 from advancing for a full vote.

In March of this year, Leno lobbied for the senate bill dubbed "Leno's Law."

Collector vehicles built in 1975 or earlier are exempt from portions of a biennial smog test.
