SIMI VALLEY, Calif. (KABC) -- A man who was killed alongside his wife in a shooting outside their Simi Valley home has been identified by his employer as a doctor.

Adventist Health Simi Valley released the following statement that identified the victims of Sunday afternoon's shooting as Dr. Eric Cordes and his wife, Vicki.

"Dr. Cordes was a highly respected, board-certified radiologist and beloved physician who served this community with compassion and excellence for nearly 30 years. Our hearts are with his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of working alongside him as we grieve this shocking loss."

Cordes also worked for Focus Medical Imaging. The medical group released the following statement:

"Dr. Eric Cordes was a brilliant, hardworking doctor, and a respected colleague. He served the Simi Valley community and surrounding areas throughout his entire career, never once leaving for other communities. Our entire group will be thinking and praying for him and his family today. He will surely be missed."

Police believe the shooting was a targeted attack and there is no active threat to the public, though a suspect has yet to be identified or arrested. The shooter reportedly got into a vehicle and fled the scene.

"We don't believe this is a random act," said Sgt. Rick Morton. "We do believe the victims were targeted."

Morton said neighbors speculated that the suspect may be the stepson of one of the victims, though police have yet to confirm that information.

Police told Eyewitness News they believe an apparent suicide in Chino a few hours after the shooting is likely related to the double murder.

According to Chino police, the deceased individual was found near a burning vehicle.

"We're unable to substantiate who that suspect is, due to the condition of the subject that is located in Chino," Morton said. "We've heard speculation. We have not put out any information as far as who the subject is. We don't want to misidentify someone, so we're waiting until we get confirmation from the medical examiner to see who that was...in that vehicle."

Neighbors in the community are still in shock over their murders.

Mike Hylton, who went to the couple's wedding, described the victims as good neighbors and good people.

"Eric was... a figure in the community with regards to being the director of radiology over at Adventist Health in Simi. He's known by a lot of people and it's just really sad," he added.

Police have not officially identified the victims, but said a couple in their 60s were found shot in the driveway of their home on Hawks Bill Place. They both later died at the hospital.

A 911 caller reported seeing a man walk up to an open garage. Hylton said his son heard the gunshots that night.

"I didn't hear the gunshots. My son did. He was upstairs and the window was open, so he heard the gunshots and looked out the window and saw the car speeding away," Hylton said.
