UC schools get record number of applicants; UCLA at top of list

WESTWOOD, LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- A record number of more than 119,000 students submitted applications to UCLA for the fall semester, making it the most applied-to four-year university in the U.S.

The school made the announcement on Monday.

The applicants represented the bulk of a record 206,000 people who applied for admission to University of California campuses across the state, which is a 6.4 increase over fall 2015 and the 12th straight year of record-setting application numbers.

The good news for this year's large applicant pool is the UC system plans to enroll 5,000 more new students in the fall than it did for the current academic year.

"The increase in applications from Californians will help us reach our goal of adding 5,000 more undergraduate residents this year and 10,000 over three years," UC President Janet Napolitano said. "In particular, our efforts to boost the number of applicants transferring from California's community colleges are paying off."

The UCLA applicants include more than 97,000 potential freshman and 22,000 prospective transfer students for the fall semester.

Prospective freshmen will be notified about admission decisions by April 1, and admitted students will have until May 1 to accept enrollment. Transfer students will be notified by April 30 about admission decisions and will have until June 1 to commit.
